Progressive Design-Build (PDB) is gaining popularity, particularly for large, complex projects, and offers several advantages over the traditional design-build approach. Using a qualifications-based selection approach, PDB advances design, pricing, and construction in stages with “off-ramps” that provide flexibility at key decision points. This approach differs from traditional design-build and creates both opportunities and risks for project owners and design-builders. ConsensusDocs has published its first standard document addressing PDB to account for these unique features. However, as with all new delivery models, insurance products do not always align cleanly, leaving certain risks stranded.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the progressive design-build delivery method and how it differs from traditional design-build.
- Presenters will identify and evaluate the key benefits, drawbacks, and risk considerations—including insurance challenges—unique to the progressive design-build approach.
- Attendees will learn practical contracting strategies to fairly allocate risk and address potential “stranded” exposures on progressive design-build projects.
- Presenters will discuss the new ConsensusDocs Progressive Design-Build standard form contract and provide practical tips and pointers on implementing the new form contract.

- Mark Peterson, Managing Director & Construction Practice Leader, Howden US
- Jeff Miller, Chief Legal Officer, The Haskell Company
