Xylazine, or “Tranq” is a non-opioid veterinary sedative that, when mixed with fentanyl, has been responsible for an increasing number of overdose deaths in the past two years. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Xylazine-positive overdose deaths have skyrocketed by alarming percentages across different regions, including a staggering 1,127% in the South. Furthermore, Naloxone or Narcan does not reverse the effects of this drug during an overdose. Overall, this concerning trend has led the current administration to declare Xylazine an Emerging Threat.
